Hawaiian Honey and Macadamia Nuts from Fire Mountain Farm

Fire Mountain Farm in the Hamakua District of the Big Island of Hawaii, on the lower slopes of Mauna Kea volcano, produces wonderful, Hawaiian macadamia nuts and Hamakua Coffee, and usually also have wonderful raw, unfiltered Hawaiian farm honey but, due to a recent lack of attention, the bees have escaped and we are in the process of re-establishing them. Located next to the Hawaiian Vanilla Company, this small, family-run farm is owned by the Barry Family. The Barrys purchased the farm from the Yokoyama family in 2004. With the purchase they also acquired historic macadamia nut and coffee processing equipment which is still in use. The Barrys pride themselves on the absence of herbicides and pesticides on the farm as well as using no chemical fertilizers. Over the last several years Fire Mountain Farm has transitioned to organic methods of farming, using our own compost and manure for fertilizer. Farm sheep and a donkey keep the weeds and grass mowed.
Fire Mountain Farm grows primarily macadamia nut and coffee trees with sprinklings of various citrus, avocado, persimmon, papaya and loquat trees. Surrounding the farm are forests of eucalyptus, guava, and native Ohia lehua. When productive, these trees provide pollen for the bees as well as food for the wild turkeys, other wild birds, the farm chickens, sheep and donkey. With some effort and a lot of fence patrolling we have managed to keep the wild pigs out of the farm as they too love the macadamia nuts and other fruits.
Fire Mountain Farm is a very small operation owned by enthusiastic amateurs who learn by doing. All picking and processing is done by hand. Since we produce smaller amounts our products are very fresh and tasty.
