Hawaiian Honey and Macadamia Nuts from Fire Mountain Farm
Fire Mountain Farm in the Hamakua District of the Big Island of Hawaii, on the lower slopes of Mauna Kea volcano, produces unique, raw, unfiltered Hawaiian farm honey and wonderful, chemical free Hawaiian macadamia nut products. Located next to the Hawaiian Vanilla Company, this small, family run farm is owned by Chips and Gail Barry. The Barrys purchased the farm from the Yokoyama family in 2004. With the purchase they also acquired historic macadamia nut and coffee processing equipment which is still in use. The Barrys pride themselves on the absence of herbicides and pesticides on the farm as well as using no chemical fertilizers. This has necessitated a number of adjustments in their method of operation.
Surrounded by macadamia nut, coffee and guava trees, and nearby forests of eucalyptus and native Ohia lehua, the sixteen (and expanding) active bee hives on our property busily produce wonderful, raw, unfiltered honey for the enjoyment of all who try it. We have also developed a product we have trade marked as Macamania®. Macamania® combines our wonderful Hawaiian honey with our own macadamia nuts, ground into a luscious butter. Macamania is a very delicious addition to toast or other bread products and can also be added to cookies and pastry with very tasty results.
Fire Mountain Farm is a small operation run by amateurs who are learning by doing. The six adults involved (see picture ) have careers in medicine, law, education, landscape architecture and utilities. We are not necessarily trying to become big, corporate, and impersonal, and we are as concerned about getting too many orders as we are about getting too few. Production capacity will improve over time, especially as the two oldsters retire from full time jobs to work more at the farm. Over time, we hope to add our own version of Kona-type coffee to the products, and eventually maybe even chocolate. The first cacao trees have been planted, and if they thrive, the coffee and chocolate may produce caffeine overload.
